What is dementia?
If there is one condition that most people fear as much as cancer, it is dementia. The term dementia is used to describe a set of symptoms that are caused by disorders of the brain. People with dementia have problems with remembering, thinking and reasoning to an extent that interferes with their daily life. Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common form of dementia. The terms Alzheimer’s and dementia are often used interchangeably.
Why do we focus on the prevention of dementia?
Millions of dollars have been spent in trying to find a cure for dementias like Alzheimer’s Disease. But there is no curative treatment yet. There are medications that can help with managing symptoms, but nothing that will get rid of the disease permanently.
Dementias like Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) start decades before someone develops symptoms. ((Ref)). Though curative treatments for AD are not available yet, the long time frame provides an opportunity for risk reduction.
